Two Cases of Drug Induced Methemoglobinemia

Abstract

|
|
2 cases of acquired methemoglobinemia were discussed, one of which was suspected as acetanilid induced methemoglobinemia and others due to tetramizole. All patients complained of suddenly developed bluish discoloration, fever and headache without any specific physical findings except cyanosis. Diagnosis was confirmed by quantitative estimation of methemoglobin with Evelyn and Malloy´s technique. Treatment was initiated with intravenous infusion of methylene blue and vitamin C with 5%´ D/W resulting in good effect. Brief review of literature about methemoglobinemia was made.
